- Conieglen River is
a small West coast spate River. To reach it head through Campbeltown
towards Machrihanish & take the turnoff at Stewarton for Southend.
Pennygowan is where you cross a humped backed bridge on the road, you
can fish from here to the sea Approx 5 miles.
- Permits are from Kintyre
Angling Club and are available from A.P.MacGrorys in Campbeltown. The
River is fly only except when it is in spate, when you can use a spinner
or worm. There are areas where the fly is near impossible to fish the
fly & bait fishing is not frowned upon when the fly cannot be fished. If
you are bait fishing a pool give way to anglers fishing the fly.
- I've marked the main
pools on the map to give you a good start. Please remember for a good
chance of a Salmon or Sea trout you need a bit of rain.Fish the River
the day after rain as the water runs off quickly.
- Brown Trout can also
be caught but these are usually small. There are exceptions though,
I've seen a Brown Trout of 2lbs taken when the water was in good condition.
- Small size 10 or 12
trebles seem to do well on Coniglen as they do in a lot of small rivers.
Try an Ally's or an Apache shrimp.
- Some parts of the river
are out of bounds, I've marked these on the map. Please avoid walking
through these areas, basically avoid fishing the bank on that side,
by all means fish the bank from the opposite side. Fishing above Pennygowan
is not allowed.
- Day ticket £12.50.
- Visitors 2 week all
waters ticket £60
