Loch Ruan can be reached via Auchalochy. There is a track running along the side of Auchalochy halfway up the hill on the seaward side which runs to Loch Ruan.Permits are from Kintyre Angling Club and are available from A.P.MacGrorys in Campbeltown.

The loch is bank only for the simple reason that there are no boats on the loch. Fishing for adults is fly only, juniors under 12 are allowed to bait fish.
The wee loch is truly away from it all and when you fish it you will very seldom see another angler. The trout in the loch are native brown trout, small but plentiful, don't be suprised if you catch double figures of these wee trout. Please remember you can only keep those above 9 inches in size. There are a few larger fish in the loch but a fish of 12 oz's can be counted a good one.

I've found black flies small or hairy always seem to work well, but any team of wets usually do well. Also worth a try is a small black dry fly. This is a great loch for beginners & juniors as the trout are freetaking. There isn't much bottom feeding in the loch hence why the trout are small, but there can be a good hatch of fly at times and you may find yourself spoilt for choice.

Try the areas marked in yellow these are usually where the bigger fish are to be found. The loch is set in a bowl and the bank runs out sometimes with the steepness of the hills so sometimes the casting can be interesting. I wouldn't recommend wading as the loch drops off sharply around the edges but the far bay near the dam is about the safest bit of the loch to do this
